Our Story
Sciton’s History
When choosing to partner with a company, it’s important to know its history, how it got to where it is today, and its vision for the future. At Sciton, we are extremely proud of our history.
Founded in 1997 by two visionary laser physicists, Dr. Jim Hobart, PhD, and Dr. Dan Negus, PhD, Sciton is built on a legacy of innovation, integrity, and a relentless commitment to excellence.
In 1966, Jim, a pioneer in the laser industry, founded the highly successful laser company Coherent Radiation. One of his most notable achievements was designing the very first commercially available CO₂ laser in the world. Interestingly, Jim powered it using a 220-volt outlet from a colleague’s laundry room. In the 1990s, Jim and his team designed a CO2 laser called the UltraPulse, which for many years was considered the gold standard in laser resurfacing.
Coherent became the largest and most successful laser company in the world. In the mid-90s, their aesthetic division was sold to an Israeli company called ESC, which later became modern-day Lumenis.
In 1996, Jim was Chairman of the Board of Coherent, but the company he had built from the ground up had changed. It had become a huge, publicly traded corporation, where Wall Street’s demands for higher profits often came with pressure to cut corners.
Jim, notorious for stopping the production line when something wasn’t right from a quality standpoint, disagreed with this model and ultimately left the company he had founded 30 years earlier.
Retirement, however, wasn’t in the cards for Jim. In 1997, driven by his passion for quality and innovation, Jim brought Coherent’s Head of Research and Development, Dr. Dan Negus, along with 15 other key individuals and founded Sciton. Together, they set out to create a company that puts people and quality first—a commitment that remains at the heart of Sciton’s mission.
Our Core Values: What Sets Sciton Apart
At Sciton, our guiding principle has always been simple: “Do the Right Thing.” Established as our original corporate policy in 1997, this value continues to shape our decisions and actions every day.
4 Principles That Define Us
1. Best-in-Class Technology
We’ve been committed to designing proven, best-in-class laser and light systems using only the highest-quality materials. Every Sciton system is hand-built in our headquarters in Palo Alto, California.
This commitment to quality has stood the test of time: 86% of all Sciton systems built since 1997—and 95% of those built in the last decade—are still in use today. Even more remarkable, they remain relevant in today’s market, a testament to our science-driven approach. Our motto, Because Results Matter, reflects our dedication to delivering superior outcomes for providers and patients.
2. Eliminating Obsolescence
Your investment should evolve with your practice—never become outdated or obsolete. That’s why our modular platforms are designed to be upgradeable and expandable. Whether it’s the JOULEX®, mJOULE™, or BARE HR™ platform, our systems adapt to evolving patient needs, allowing you to add new treatments or handpieces over time.
3. Practical Consumables
At Sciton, we design with practicality in mind. We only use disposables when medically necessary, such as with our MOXI™ and HALO® tips. This ensures your practice benefits from maximum value and reliability without unnecessary ongoing costs. It’s another way we uphold our commitment to supporting providers with integrity.
4. Unmatched Support
Our dedication to your success extends far beyond the point of purchase. Sciton offers a comprehensive support system with clinical training, advanced education, and marketing resources. Every device comes with 1-2 days of in-office training from highly qualified Clinical Nurse Educators, followed by access to advanced programs like preceptorships, laser physics courses, and educational workshops.
We also host Skin CEO—a two-day event where Sciton owners and providers from around the globe connect and learn from the leading minds in laser medicine. These events are designed to help you get the most out of your technology and elevate your expertise.
To further support your practice, our Concierge Marketing Program helps you promote your Sciton treatments and grow your business on social media. At Sciton, we’re not just selling technology—we’re here to ensure it drives your growth and success.
