Sciton Obtains FDA Approval For Its New Longpulse Nd:YAG Laser For Hair Removal

Palo Alto, CA. — December 4, 2000 — Sciton, Inc., announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has cleared the ClearScan YAG laser for use in hair removal in skin types I-VI. Image can now be sold for treating Hair Removal and also Vascular Lesions.

By analysts’ estimates, the combined hair removal and vascular markets are well over a billion dollars per year market in the U.S. Sciton’s goal is to provide physicians with one laser that will effectively and efficiently treat all skin types and hair colors, in a relatively painless manner. Chris Zachary M.D., FRCP said, “Providing a pain-free procedure that can be performed quickly is essential.”

According to Dan Negus, President of Sciton, Inc., “We have taken a long hard look at the hair removal and vascular markets and believe we have the unique technology to provide the customer with a single, effective solution. Efficacy, Pain Management, and Speed are the three critical elements that need to be present in a hair removal system and Image has all three.”Sciton’s lasers now have the ability for multiple wavelengths in the same chassis.

In 1998, Sciton revolutionized the skin resurfacing market with the introduction of the Contour™ dual-mode long pulse erbium laser that allows physicians to independently select the depth of ablation and coagulation. Physicians are able to choose the depth of treatment required to achieve effective results in measurements of microns of tissue, resulting in an extremely repeatable and uniform treatment.
